RailPark Distillery (2022 redesign)

Overview

What is RailPark Distillery?

This brand concept was originally developed in May 2019 as part of my senior capstone. Previously, I worked with a team and we decided to name the distillery ‘Borderline Distillery.’ In February 2022, I decided to revisit this idea and give it a refresh.

The concept was created with the history L&N Railroad in mind. During its time the L&N Railroad ran from Louisville, KY to Nashville, TN, one of its stops being in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Currently, the Kentucky RailPark Museum occupies a portion of the former train station. The idea was to base the distillery in the vacant half of the Kentucky RailPark building.

Previously, our group decided the distillery would distill brandy in an attempt to separate ourselves from the many bourbon distilleries in the state. However, most bourbon distilleries are located in northern Kentucky.  I saw this as the perfect reason to bring one to southern Kentucky. The state is known for its bourbon and that alone could help launch yet another successful distillery in the state.

Finally, I decided that the name RailPark Distillery would make more sense and would be a great way to establish a connection between the distillery and museum.

The brand identity

Establishing a brand

COLORS & TEXTURES

The color pallet includes blues, rustic reds and oranges, with a pop of yellow. These colors paired well with the neutral-colored maps and wood textures, all of these things create a cohesive rustic look.

Maps were an inspiration for the brand. Maps of the original L&N train route have been incorporated throughout the brand assets.

TYPE

Distressed block lettering was chosen for the brand’s typeface. D Day Stencil really brought the logo and labels together with a vintage, yet modern feel that consumers of this bourbon would look for. A serif-font with block lettering was chosen for the brand’s typeface because it helped to represent the strength and class of this formerly bustling railroad. A standard san serif font is used for body copy.

RailPark Distillery Branding

Location

Tourism in the area of Bowling Green is bigger than most might think and this bourbon with a strong brand will not only draw tourists in, but keep them coming back. It was decided that RailPark Distillery’s brand would be designed as a modern attempt to value and honor the historic L&N Railroad and the old Bowling Green train station. The idea would be to have the distillery inside of the empty space in the old train station. By setting up here, tourists would have a variety of entertaining options to keep themselves busy: A distillery, bar, museum, and train tours all in one place!

Packaging

The first ever RailPark bourbon would be called “Class 1 Bourbon.” L&N Railroad was a Class 1 railroad, hence the name of the bourbon.

After this was established, it was time to begin the package design. While creating the packaging, I weighed between different bottle styles. Ultimately I decided to go with a classic glass bottle. The design is intended to be classic, yet modern in order to draw in a bit of the history of the railroad but with a spin. Below you can see a few different possible bottles for Class 1 as well as a limited edition barrel proof bourbon.

Web design

The Maker’s Mark website was a big inspiration for developing the layout of the website. Makers Mark uses parallax pages that are continuous and visually stunning. The big thing here was to stay consistent with the brand. Mockups were created for desktop and mobile in Adobe XD and were later adapted for tablet. Screen captures of some of the desktop pages can be seen below.
